Two important landmarks on Ananda Sukarlan vocal works

1. Ananda Sukarlan works with 27 vocalists of Musicasa
2. World Premiere of 3 songs for tenor to be broadcast worldwide

1. MUSICASA presents an evening of Ananda Sukarlan vocal works

This is the most extensive and intensive concert of Ananda Sukarlan's vocal works to date. 27 chosen students of Musicasa Studio will perform around 40 of Ananda's songs in one night, as a retrospective of his achievement as Indonesia's prominent composer for the human voice. The composer himself will accompany all singers at the piano during this 2-hour concert, which will take place at Erasmus Huis (Kuningan, Jakarta) on Thursday, November 25th starting at 7 p.m

Musicasa is one of the most important vocal training studio in Indonesia. Headed by conductor Tommy Prabowo and baritone Joseph Kristanto who has intensely collaborated and sung most of Ananda's music involving the baritone, it has produced the best singers of Indonesia today. It was Joseph who has inspired Ananda to write many works involving the baritone voice. His contagious passion for Ananda's music is now passed to his students and the week prior to this concert Ananda was invited to coach them as well as give them a deep insight of his musical and artistic ideas and backgrounds of his vocal works.

Ananda Sukarlan has composed 3 operas, 2 cantatas, dozens of choir works and more than 100 works for voice (solo and duet) with piano, harp or guitar accompaniment. In his blog http://andystarblogger.blogspot.com/ he has repeatedly admitted that the human voice is his favorite instrument. In this marathon concert one can delve deep into his rich and strange soundworld and his darkest psyche which can only be accessed through his music.

There will be the "greatest hits" such as "Dalam Doaku", "Dalam Sakit" etc., but there are also new works and premieres, such as the complete song-cycles "Dua Sapardi untuk Binu", "A untuk Akis, Alam dan Angkasa" etc.
Songs by Ananda Sukarlan performed in this concert are based on poems by : Sapardi Djoko Damono, Goenawan Mohamad,Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana, Hasan Aspahani, Abang Edwin SA, Medy Loekito, Eka Budianta, Sitor Situmorang, Ilham Malayu, Walt Whitman, Henry Longfellow, Amado Nervo, Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, Lord Byron, Joko Pinurbo

2. Wherever you are on this planet, you can listen to the World Premiere of Ananda Sukarlan's new song-cycle for tenor & piano from Louisville, USA, next Wednesday (already Thursday in Indonesia and eastward) on November 17th at WUOL 90.5 FM classical radio and broadcast by internet radio throughout the whole world.

"3 S Dalam Cinta" (3 S in love) is a song-cycle in Indonesian consisting of 3 love songs for tenor and piano based on poems by Sitor Situmorang and Sapardi Djoko Damono. The second one, "Pria yang (pergi) jauh" was written in 2009 as a farewell song to its dedicatee, Farman Purnama, who left for his studies in Holland and since then has often been performed, and this year Ananda has added 2 songs to sandwich it and complete them as a cycle. They now are :

Malam Kebumen (Sitor Situmorang), dedicated to Dani Dumadi
Pria yang (pergi) Jauh (Sapardi Djoko Damono, Sonet no.3), ded. to Farman Purnama
Surat Kertas Hijau (Sitor Situmorang), ded. to Ivan Yohan.

The World Premiere in Louisville will be performed by tenor Samuel Tandei and pianist Ruthanne Fulton, and will be broadcast live. They will complete the program with other Ananda's other songs for medium-high voice Dalam Sakit (Sapardi Djoko Damono, dedicated to all who died of AIDS), Meninggalkan Kandang (Eka Budianta, in memoriam Prof. Dr. Fuad Hassan), Oktava Tanggal Tua (Eka Budianta) and Kama (on poem written in jail by Ilham Malayu) as well as other classical songs by Western composers.
